Analysis of album cover artwork - Mrs Fisher

Analysis of Album cover artwork

East 17

1. Costume: The artists are wearing tracksuits and other baggy clothing; they are all wearing caps and hooded jackets which suggests that they are trying to go for the thug like image

2. Positioning of characters: The characters are bent down looking at the camera face-on. This portrays them as arrogant and domineering, this is help by a low-angle shot which shows the artist higher than us.

3. Lightning: There is shadowing around their faces which means that their whole faces are not being shown and the same for many other parts of their bodies. This gives off a mysterious image.

4. Colour: Dark colours are used to compliment the dark, thug like, mysterious image. PROPS: The dog gives off a thug like image also.

5. Location: The picture shows that they have a wall behind them which indicates that they are on the streets, also gives off a thug like image.

6. There facial expressions are all demeaning which also suggest that they are trying to look powerful and thug-like.

This makes me think that the music is of the rap genre and thug-like and also the artists. It makes me not want to buy their album. The album cover is not inviting to me at all.

The conventions which I can identify from looking at this East 17 album cover are; conventions of an r’n’b video, they thug-like. I come to this identification by the way they are dressed and their facial expressions.

Katherine Jenkins

1.

Costume: In this album cover, Katherine Jenkins is wearing a red dress which connotes love and also fire, which suggests that her songs are love songs and that she is a fiery artist with a lot of passion for what she does.

2. Positioning of characters: Katherine Jenkins is positioned in the middle of the picture with theatre curtains either side. This shows that she is the ‘centre of theatre’ and also suggests that she is some-what theatrical. The red curtains match her dress and therefore creates a link between her and them.

3. Lighting: The lighting is bright and shows every aspect of the picture which gives off an angelic look and makes everything look angelic and proper.

4. Colour: Red is the dominating colour in this picture which suggests love.

5. Facial Expression: Gives off a serene image, makes the artist look friendly, calm and inviting.

6. Props: Red curtains makes a whole theatrical image

This album cover artwork invites me. It makes me want to listen to her music. This leads me to the understanding that she is an opera singer and it also leads me to thinking that she is a happy person.

I can identify that she is an opera singer; I can also see that she conforms to the generic conventions of a pop artist also, from her clothing.

  1. Yasmin, your analysis is detailed and you summarise the impact of the techniques however how does it attract the target audience? Who is the target audience? and why would they be drawn to the album covers, based on the techniques you have highlighted?
