Research into artist - Beyonce- Miss Georgiou

Research into artist

Beyonce's subculture values and beliefs

CCCS’ think that all subcultures come from the mainstream, mainstream being what the media believe is popular at the time. Beyonce is an R’n’b artist and a role model. I believe this because the way in which she portrays herself. She is an independent woman and is well mannered this is why some people may look up to her, for example; young girls etc. This makes her a role model because people aspire to be just like her. She is also a successful r ‘n’ b artist; this is because she conforms to the generic conventions of an R ‘N’B artist. The way in which she performs shows that she is an R ‘N’ B artist, her dance routines connotes that she is an R ‘N’ B artist because she is feisty with her dancing. She portrays an attitude when she dances and also dances to the beat of the song.

Beyonce is sold to the audience; she is shown as an independent and successful woman. She has brought up and made her career on her own, she done this by making herself successful. She produces her own designer perfumes which back up my point that she is independent and successful.
Dyer star theory – Her audience imitate her by buying her perfume, copying her dance routines (single ladies dance routine) and copying her style. Her audience copy her style because they want to look like her; they want to be exactly like her. Beyonce shows that she is independent and successful and this makes her audience want to take up that image also.

I will embed Beyonce's values and beliefs into my music video by conveying my artist as someone who is fiery and in charge. She will be shown as successful and independent. In my music video the artist will be like Beyonce in her mannerisms.

Censorship - Miss Georgiou

SHOULD MUSIC VIDEOS BE CENSORED?

I found out that artists think that the government should not censor the music because the artists should be allowed to express themselves and it is the audience choice to what they listen to. They also say that censorship ruins the music.

The fans say that swear words are only words and they do not harm people. Also they are form of expression and it helps the fans to understand the artist in more detail. They also said fans only listen to the music and they do not follow the artist’s lifestyle.

The record labels say that the some artists have their own Labels which mean that they are free to make their own decisions. They also say that some artist’s songs are a reflection of their lives, cultures and upbringing so they should be allowed to sing/rap about it.

Some parents say that the children and teenagers get carried away with what they see in the media and then try to copy and emulate the artist. This includes kids joining gangs and carrying weapons. They also say that children are getting bad reputations for listening to the artist and therefore copying him/her.

Some parents think that you should not censor music videos because it is okay to listen to artist’s for example; Eminem because he raps about his life. They also say that video’s shouldn’t be censored because it makes the artist unique and individual.

Radio stations for example; Choice FM say that they consider all their listeners and will not broadcast any music that is not appropriate. They also say that a lot of children listen to the radio on their way to school and some songs for example; Eminem’s are too explicit to be broadcast nless they are censored. They think that other words should be used to replace the indecent words so that they songs can still be played.

Music channels, AKA say that they are known for playing Grime and Rap music videos so music should not be censored and it is down to the parents to control what their children are listening to. They also say that the audience know what to expect from the channel and there are similar artists who feature on a regular basis.

MTV say that videos which are too explicit should be censored so that they are not seen by people of a young age and then copied.

After looking at the many points of views which people have on censorship, I have come to the conclusion that I will take highly into consideration, that most people dislike hearing swear words and other in descent things sang/said on the radio, television etc and therefore not involve any form of in descent material, weather it being swearing, exposure etc. This would ensure that I keep all types of audiences and they will not be put off by anything which isn't appropriate. However, my artist isn't to be portrayed in that way. My music video will not offend the rules of censorship as there will be no nudity or swearing, meaning that it will be suitable for every audience to watch and enjoy.

Design brief tasks - Mrs Fisher

Design brief tasks

In this creation brief there are many headings all in which contribute to the designers understanding of the product and the brief.

The first heading is ‘WHERE ARE WE NOW’ this gives the designer an overview of the current state that they are in. It shows the market climate, history, heritage and significance. This helps the designer.

The next heading is ‘THE ALBUM CONCEPT’ this gives the designer the knowledge of what idea the artist is trying to put across through the art work. This outlines the main idea.

The next heading is ‘who is our consumer?’ this helps the designer gain the knowledge of who they’re aiming the art work at. This helps to design the art work to the best of their ability.

‘What is the consumer reaction we want’ this heading indicates the kind of reaction that they want from their audience and therefore influences the ideas and the production of the artwork.

‘How will we know it worked?’ this heading helps the designer to outline specifications which would determine the success of their artwork. They would then know of it worked or not.

'Concept' is the idea of the album cover this means that from this the designer can get the overall idea of the outcome of the album cover and therefore produce it solely on the idea in which has been produced and the designer can therefore fulfil the expectations of the artist.

A ‘brand’ is what identifies the product for example; Nike is a brand this is shown by a logo. Brands are also seen on games etc. This is to familiarize the designer with the brand.

A ‘consumer’ is the person who buys the product; this helps the designer as it gives him/her an outline on how they should produce their artwork by targeting the audience and therefore producing in a way that will attract that particular audience.

A ‘Product’ in this case; is the album cover. It is important for the designer to know what they are creating so that they can make it to the standards in which the artist expects and therefore appeal to the target audience.

The ‘budget’ is the limitation of money. This gives the designer a specific amount of money to work with, this means that they have to prioritise what they need for the album cover and therefore not waste money on unnecessary items.

The difference between the product overview and the creation brief is that in the product overview the headings are explained in more detail which means that the designer develops a greater understand of the artist and his/her expectations. In comparison, the creative brief gives clear bullet points with the details in. This makes the whole designing process easier as it is easier to see the more important information on the album cover.

Analysis of a star using dyers star theory - Mrs Fisher

Analysis of a star using Dyer's star theory

Beyonce

Ø Her promotional material constructs an image in which she wants to be seen as. Her promotional material however may also reveal her real person as she might be the same as how her image is portrayed. She could be showing her audience her real image, in a discreet way. Either way we are not really let in to her dislikes/likes, family background etc. This is so that she can leave her audience wanting more.

Ø Beyonce represents a woman, who is strong willed, independent and fiery. She comes across as someone who in charge and also someone who knows what she wants. ‘I am Sasha Fierce’ (the name of her current album). The word Fierce backs up my point that she is strong willed, independent and fiery. She also has a specific fashion sense which defines her as an artist. The image in which she represents is an image in which her audience can aspire too. For example. Her attitude and her exterior appearance (clothing ECT). Her audience can consume her image by buying clothing similar to her and also, aspiring to act, sing and dance like her. Like a ‘diva’.

Ø The images which are being represented through the promotional material are; that Beyonce is a young, independent, beautiful individual woman. Her costume/wardrobe are clothes which are ‘Diva-like’ which shows that she wants to be seen as a diva. The locations in which her promotional materials are taken place show that she is also, independent and ‘in charge’ once again. Her body language represents her as a woman with attitude and sophistication. The same applies for how her make-up, hair and props represent her.

The images leave the audience wanting to know more in order to complete their understanding of the artist, it leaves them wanting to then buy more magazines, and music etc which would then give out more information about the artist and therefore mean that every time they are consuming something from the artist, weather it being a piece of music, music video or images (from magazines etc) they are understanding more about her. However, they will never fully know everything about the artist.

The audience would be positioning themselves within a culture, as a lot of people aspire to look like and act Beyonce and therefore many people would act and look the same. Setting a trend within society and therefore adding to the amount of people who dress and act the same.
